JANET has introduced a new desktop videoconferencing feature whereby those who have booked a video conference can invite guests to join them from their desktop or Windows laptop anywhere they have an internet connection – so this could be home, office or classroom for example. All you need is a webcam, microphone and small piece of software which you download onto the machine (IT Departments will probably have to do this for office or student computers, but you can do it yourself on your home pc or laptop if you have administrator privileges).
This should help with the green IT agenda and perhaps go some way to eliminate unnecessary cross- country travel to meetings/conferences, especially if they are of short duration.
